7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Rhodes

Rhodes quickly became one of my favorite places in Greece — sun-drenched beaches, historic charm, amazing food… But if I knew a few things beforehand, my trip would’ve been even smoother. So here’s what you should know:

1. Rhodes Is Big – Plan Accordingly

This isn’t a small island you can cross in 30 minutes. From Rhodes Town to Prasonisi in the south takes about 1.5 hours by car. If you want to explore the quieter beaches and mountain villages, rent a car early in your trip.

2. You’ll Fall in Love With the Villages

Sure, the Old Town is stunning, and Lindos is picture-perfect. But places like Embonas, Siana, or Monolithos offer a more local feel. You’ll find old men playing backgammon, tiny bakeries, and tavernas serving the best food you’ve never heard of.

3. Eat the Local Dishes – Not Just the Tourist Menu

Skip the pizza and gyros (okay, have a gyro or two). Look for:

  • Pitaroudia (fried chickpea balls – a Rhodes classic)
  • Goat in lemon sauce
  • Hilopites (handmade pasta)
Ask the waiter what the house special is — you won’t regret it.

4. Pack for Sun, Wind, and Steps

You’ll be walking a lot, especially on cobblestones in Rhodes Old Town or climbing to the Acropolis in Lindos. Bring:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • A hat and high-SPF sunscreen
  • A light scarf (doubles as a shoulder cover for churches or shade on hikes)

5. Some of the Best Beaches Aren’t on the Main Map

Agathi, Glystra, Plimmiri — they may not be famous, but they’re clean, quiet, and often more authentic. Bring snacks and your own umbrella if you go off the beaten path.

6. Locals Are Friendly – Talk to Them!

Many Rhodes locals speak English and love sharing tips — best tavernas, hidden spots, even where to watch the sunset. A simple “Kaliméra” (good morning) opens doors.

7. The Magic Is in the Evenings

Rhodes comes alive after 8pm. Whether you’re watching the sun set behind a castle or strolling through a buzzing square, slow down and enjoy the atmosphere. Dinners are late, long, and full of laughter.

If you’re planning a trip to Rhodes, take your time, go a bit off-route, and let the island charm you slowly. You won’t want to leave.
