Kritinia is a charming traditional village perched on the slopes of Mount Attavyros on the west coast of Rhodes. Known for its rich medieval history, incredible views, and authentic Rhodian culture, Kritinia is a must-visit for travelers seeking to explore the island’s hidden treasures beyond the beaches.

The village name means “New Crete” (from the Greek “Kriti” for Crete), as it was believed to be settled by Cretan refugees during the Ottoman era. Today, Kritinia offers a mix of natural beauty, local tradition, and one of the most stunning medieval castles in the Aegean.

🏰 Kritinia Castle (Castello)

The crown jewel of Kritinia is its medieval castle, built in 1472 by the Knights of St. John. The castle was constructed to protect the western coastline from Ottoman pirates and invaders. Perched on a hilltop above the village, the Kritinia Castle offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, nearby islands such as Halki, and the rugged Rhodian landscape.

  • 🏯 Architectural Highlights: The castle combines Byzantine and medieval knightly styles. Though partially in ruins, the outer walls, watchtowers, and inscriptions of the Grand Masters remain.
  • 📷 Photo Spot: Sunset views from the castle are particularly famous among photographers and travelers.
