The Mythology of Rhodes
🌅 The Mythology of Rhodes – Island of the Sun God
Rhodes has a rich tapestry of mythological stories that connect the island to the gods, heroes, and legends of ancient Greece. Central to these myths is the story of Helios, the Sun God, who made Rhodes his sacred home.
☀️ Helios and the Birth of Rhodes
According to Greek mythology, when Zeus divided the world among the Olympian gods, Helios was absent. Upon his return, he asked for a land to call his own. Zeus promised that the next land to rise from the sea would belong to him.
- Rhodes emerged from the depths of the Aegean Sea, and Helios claimed it.
- He shined his light upon the island, making it lush, fertile, and beautiful.
- As a result, Rhodes was known as the Island of the Sun, and Helios became its divine protector.
👸 The Nymph Rhode
- Helios fell in love with the nymph Rhode, daughter of Poseidon (god of the sea) and Amphitrite.
- Together, they had seven sons, known as the Heliadae, who became wise astronomers and rulers of Rhodes.
- Rhode became the eponymous figure of the island – giving it its name.
🧠 The Heliadae – Sons of the Sun
The seven sons of Helios and Rhode were said to be gifted with wisdom and scientific knowledge. One of them, Tenages, was a skilled scientist, but he was murdered by his jealous brothers. When the crime was discovered, the other brothers were exiled, and Cercaphus, the innocent one, inherited the rule of the island.
