The Knights of Rhodes
🏰 The Knights of Rhodes – Guardians of a Medieval Legacy
The Knights of Rhodes, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, played a pivotal role in shaping the island’s identity during the Middle Ages. Their legacy is still deeply embedded in the architecture, fortifications, and atmosphere of Rhodes Town.
⚔️ Who Were the Knights?
- The Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem was a religious and military order founded during the Crusades to protect pilgrims and care for the sick in the Holy Land.
- After being expelled from Jerusalem and later from Cyprus, they settled on Rhodes in 1309 and ruled the island for over two centuries until 1522.
🏰 What Did They Do in Rhodes?
- They transformed Rhodes into a fortified stronghold, building massive stone walls, moats, towers, and imposing castles.
- The most iconic is the Palace of the Grand Master, a fortress-palace that served as the headquarters of the order.
- They organized Rhodes into “tongues” or national groups, each responsible for a different part of the city’s defense.
- Their reign turned Rhodes into a cultural and military center of the Eastern Mediterranean.
🛡️ The Siege of 1522
- In 1522, the island faced a massive siege by Suleiman the Magnificent and the Ottoman Empire.
- After months of fierce resistance, the Knights were forced to surrender.
- They left Rhodes with full military honors and eventually settled in Malta, becoming known as the Knights of Malta.
